With the increasing legality of marijuana in the state of Maryland, did you know you can become a medical patient? The steps to obtain your medical card are easy; let me guide you through how to get a medical marijuana card in Maryland.

1. APPLY THROUGH MMCC:

MMCC is Maryland’s Medical Cannabis Commission. Before taking any further steps to get medical approval, you must submit an application through MMCC. Go to mmcc.maryland.gov to begin registering with the government. The application is basic information along with a photo and a $50 fee. MMCC will typically approve your application within the month of submission.

For patients 18 years and younger, you must also register a caregiver. Your caregiver can be a parent, trusted family member, or friend 21 and older. They will accompany you throughout your registration process and purchasing afterwards. The caregiver must register before the patient. Once the caregiver is registered, you may begin the minor’s application. We recommend the chosen caregiver become educated on how to get a medical marijuana card in Maryland so they understand the whole process.

2. OBTAIN A CERTIFICATION FROM A PROVIDER:

Once you receive your approval, you now must get a written certification from a provider who is registered with the MMCC. It is important that this step comes after being approved by the MMCC, because you will need your MMCC given ID to move forward. By law, the patient has to be evaluated by a provider who deems their qualifying condition worthy of a cannabis treatment plan. In order to prove your condition, past medical records and prescriptions are encouraged to bring to your appointment. After receiving the certification from the doctor, you are ready to purchase at any Maryland Medical dispensary!

Qualifying Conditions include:

cachexia, anorexia, wasting syndrome, severe or chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures, severe or persistent muscle spasms, glaucoma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or another chronic medical condition which is severe and for which other treatments have been ineffective.
